A closer look at Blue Dancers
For French artist Edgar Degas, ballet offered much more than a performance. He drew and painted dancers rehearsing, resting and adjusting their costumes, finding expressive possibilities in everyday gestures.

Created around 1898, Blue Dancers is a pastel on paper—the same medium you’ll explore in this lesson. Look at how the raised arms, tilted heads and overlapping figures create a rhythm of their own. Even without seeing a dance unfold, you can feel movement in the composition.

The colour is just as captivating. Brilliant blues and turquoises meet warm skin tones and earthy greens. Up close, individual pastel strokes remain visible; from a distance, they come together as fabric, light and movement.

What to notice

Choose one detail that catches your eye: a curve of an arm, a warm colour beside a cool one, or a few strokes suggesting the folds of a tutu. Let it inspire something in your own painting.
